What this practice covers

  • Proportions
  • Discounts, tax and percent change
  • Two-step equations
  • Circles
  • Probability
  • Mean, median and range
  • Positive and negative numbers

The questions are written for this site and made fresh for every set, so you can practise as often as you like. Every answer is checked by a program before the site is published.

Sample questions with answers

  1. 1. Solve for x: x/72 = 4/9

    A. x = 12 B. x = 288 C. x = 67 D. x = 32

    Show answer

    D. x = 32. 9 × 8 = 72, so multiply the top by 8 too: x = 4 × 8 = 32.

  2. 2. A bike costs $75 before tax. The sales tax is 20%. What is the total cost?

    A. $90.00 B. $55.00 C. $60.00 D. $15.00

    Show answer

    A. $90.00. 20% of $75 is $15.00. Add it: $90.00.

  3. 3. Solve for x: 6x + 12 = 30

    A. x = −3 B. x = 18 C. x = 7 D. x = 3

    Show answer

    D. x = 3. Subtract 12 from both sides: 6x = 18. Divide by 6: x = 3.

Tips

  • Read the whole question before you look at the answer choices.
  • Some STAAR questions ask you to type the answer instead of picking it. This practice mixes in both kinds.
  • Grade 7 STAAR does not allow a calculator, so practise without one.
  • Check the skill table at the end and practise the weakest skill first.
