What this practice covers

Each set has 20 questions drawn from these skills, mixed the way the GED Mathematical Reasoning test mixes them:

  • Discounts, tax and percent change
  • Ratios and unit rates
  • Mean, median and range
  • Area and perimeter
  • Circles
  • Volume
  • Two-step equations
  • Evaluating expressions
  • Slope and linear equations
  • Functions
  • Systems of equations
  • Quadratics and factoring
  • Exponents, roots and scientific notation

The questions are written for this site and made fresh for every set, so you can practise as often as you like. Every answer is checked by a program before the site is published.

Sample questions with answers

  1. 1. A town had 170 trees. It now has 221. By what percent did the number of trees increase?

    A. 30% B. 51% C. 23.1% D. 60%

    Show answer

    A. 30%. Increase: 221 − 170 = 51. Divide by the original: 51 ÷ 170 = 0.3, which is 30%.

  2. 2. 9 pounds of apples cost $13.50. At the same price, how much do 8 pounds cost?

    A. $12.00 B. $108.00 C. $12.50 D. $1.50

    Show answer

    A. $12.00. Find the price of 1 pound: $13.50 ÷ 9 = $1.50. Then 8 × $1.50 = $12.00.

  3. 3. What is the mean of these numbers: 9, 17, 37, 32, 39, 16?

    A. 25 B. 32 C. 30 D. 24.5

    Show answer

    A. 25. Add them (150) and divide by how many there are (6): 150 ÷ 6 = 25.

Tips

  • About half of GED math is everyday number work (percents, rates, data). The other half is algebra.
  • Learn what is on the formula sheet and what is not, so you know what to memorize.
  • Practise reading word problems slowly: most mistakes come from answering a different question.
