What this practice covers
Each set has 20 questions drawn from these skills, mixed the way the ACT math test mixes them:
- Functions
- Quadratics and factoring
- Systems of equations
- Slope and linear equations
- Two-step equations
- Evaluating expressions
- Pythagorean theorem
- Circles
- Probability
- Discounts, tax and percent change
- Exponents, roots and scientific notation
The questions are written for this site and made fresh for every set, so you can practise as often as you like. Every answer is checked by a program before the site is published.
Sample questions with answers
1. If f(x) = 4x + 5, what is f(2)?
A. 13 B. −13 C. 3 D. 11
Show answer
A. 13. Replace x with 2: 4 × 2 + 5 = 13.
2. What is the larger solution of x² − 6x + 8 = 0?
A. x = −4 B. x = −2 C. x = 2 D. x = 4
Show answer
D. x = 4. Factor: (x − 4)(x − 2) = 0, so x = 4 or x = 2. The larger is 4.
3. If 4x + y = 34 and x − y = 1, what is the value of x?
A. x = −7 B. x = 8 C. x = 6 D. x = 7
Show answer
D. x = 7. From x − y = 1, y = x − 1. Substitute it into the first equation: 5x − 1 = 34, so 5x = 35 and x = 7.
Tips
- The real test gives about 67 seconds per question (50 minutes for 45). This practice keeps the same pace: 22 minutes for 20.
- Plug the answer choices back into the equation when you are stuck. It often finds the answer faster.
- Use the skill table to decide what to study next.
