The tricks
Add the tens first, then the ones. No carrying on paper.
Times 10, then halve it. 48 × 5 = 480 ÷ 2 = 240.
Times 10, then take away the number once. 7 × 9 = 70 − 7 = 63.
For 2-digit numbers, put the sum of the digits in the middle. 53 × 11 = 583.
Double it, then divide by 10. 85 ÷ 5 = 170 ÷ 10 = 17.
Take every digit from 9 and the last one from 10. 1000 − 374 = 626.
Split into tens and ones, multiply both, add. 34 × 6 = 180 + 24 = 204.
Halve one number and double the other until it gets easy. 16 × 25 = 8 × 50 = 400.
Divide by 4, then times 100. 36 × 25 = 9 × 100 = 900.
10% moves the point, 5% is half of that, 20% is double. Handy for tips and discounts.
Multiply the first digit by the next number up, then write 25. 65² = 42 then 25 = 4225.
