Year 4 Maths Worksheets (UK Curriculum, Free PDFs)
What Year 4 Maths Covers
Year 4 is a pivotal year in UK primary maths. It's the year when all times tables up to 12 x 12 must be mastered, and it ends with the statutory Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). Written methods expand to include short multiplication and division, and fractions begin to include hundredths and simple decimals.

The Year 4 Maths Curriculum
Key skills Year 4 pupils should master:
- Number and place value — numbers up to 10,000, rounding to nearest 10, 100, 1,000
- Addition and subtraction — formal written methods with up to 4 digits
- Times tables up to 12 x 12 — recall in any order, fluently
- Short multiplication and division — written methods
- Fractions and decimals — tenths and hundredths, fractions as decimals
- Measurement — time in 12/24-hour clocks, perimeter and area of rectangles
- Geometry — symmetry, coordinates in the first quadrant
- Statistics — bar charts, time graphs, discrete and continuous data
The Multiplication Tables Check
The MTC is a statutory test taken by all Year 4 pupils in England in June. It consists of 25 timed multiplication questions covering tables from 2 to 12. Each pupil has 6 seconds to answer each question.
The MTC isn't used for streaming or reporting on individual children, but it's an important benchmark. Pupils who reach Year 4 without fluent times tables will find the test difficult — and the rest of Year 4 maths harder than it needs to be.
Download the times tables worksheet PDF for focused practice on tables up to 10 x 10, and progress to the Year 5 / Grade 4 multiplication worksheet for full practice up to 12 x 12.
Short Multiplication and Division
Year 4 introduces formal written methods for multiplying and dividing up to 3-digit numbers by a 1-digit number. These build directly on times tables fluency — if tables aren't solid, written methods fall apart.
The division worksheet PDF gives structured practice on short division, including problems with remainders.
Fractions and Decimals
Year 4 is when fractions and decimals are formally connected. Pupils learn that 1/10 equals 0.1 and 1/100 equals 0.01. They also extend fraction work to include equivalent fractions with different denominators, and add and subtract fractions with the same denominator.
Use the fractions worksheet PDF for focused practice on equivalent fractions and simple operations.
Written Methods
By the end of Year 4, written methods for addition and subtraction should be automatic. Column addition and subtraction with up to 4 digits, including carrying and borrowing through zeros, need to be fluent. Our addition worksheet PDF and subtraction worksheet PDF give plenty of structured practice.
Practice Routine
Year 4 pupils can sustain 15 to 20 minutes of focused maths practice. A typical week:
- Monday: times tables drill (10 minutes)
- Tuesday: column maths or written methods
- Wednesday: times tables drill
- Thursday: fractions or decimals
- Friday: a mixed review
Consistency matters more than intensity. Daily practice in small doses beats weekend marathon sessions every time.
Supporting Your Child
Year 4 maths can feel overwhelming because there's simply more of it. Some practical tips:
- Focus on one skill per session — don't mix times tables with fractions in a single sitting
- Keep the MTC in proportion — it's a benchmark, not a make-or-break test
- Celebrate effort, especially on harder topics like the 7, 8 and 9 times tables
- Don't hide answer keys from your child forever — teaching them to check their own work builds independence
