The Best Way to Teach Times Tables (From a Former Teacher)

Why Most Times Tables Practice Fails

Most kids are taught times tables the same way: a stack of flashcards, a chart taped to the fridge, and a lot of repetition. It works for some children, but plenty of students end up memorizing facts they don't understand — which means those facts disappear by summer.

After years of teaching third and fourth graders, I can tell you the kids who truly master times tables do three things differently: they learn in the right order, they connect facts to each other, and they practice in short, frequent bursts.

Teach the Easy Ones First

Don't start with a full 0-12 chart. You'll overwhelm your child and set them up to feel stuck. Instead, teach tables in this order:

  • ×2 — doubles most kids already know
  • ×10 — just add a zero
  • ×5 — ends in 0 or 5, easy to skip-count
  • ×1 and ×0 — identity and zero properties
  • ×3 and ×4 — build from doubling
  • ×6, ×7, ×8, ×9 — the hard ones, saved for last

This order gives your child early wins. Within a week of starting, they already "know" five tables (×0, ×1, ×2, ×5, ×10). That confidence is what keeps them motivated when the harder facts come.

Use Patterns, Not Just Memorization

Kids don't need to memorize 144 facts. They need to memorize about 30 — everything else can be derived.

  • The ×9 finger trick (hold up 10 fingers, fold down the one being multiplied)
  • ×4 is just double-double (4 × 7 = double 14 = 28)
  • ×8 is double ×4
  • 7 × 8 = 56: "five, six, seven, eight"
  • The commutative property — 6 × 8 and 8 × 6 are the same fact

When kids see the patterns, they're not memorizing random output — they're understanding multiplication.

Practice in Short Daily Bursts

Ten minutes a day beats an hour on Saturday. Every time. Research on distributed practice has been saying this for decades, but parents still try to cram.

A solid routine looks like this:

  • Monday through Thursday: 10 minutes of mixed practice
  • Friday: a timed drill to see progress
  • Weekend: a break, or a fun math game

Don't Skip the "Why"

Before drilling facts, make sure your child understands what multiplication actually is. Arrays, equal groups, and area models all help. A child who sees 4 × 6 as four rows of six objects — and can count them — has a much easier time remembering it's 24 than a child who only sees "four times six."

Track Progress, Not Perfection

Kids light up when they can see they're improving. Keep a simple chart showing which facts they've mastered. Celebrate when a new row gets checked off. Never use the chart to highlight what they don't know yet.

What "Mastery" Looks Like

A child has truly mastered a times table when they can answer facts in any order, within about three seconds, without counting on fingers or restarting at ×1. If they're still skip-counting silently, they're not done yet — they're close, but that fact hasn't moved into long-term memory.

Keep practicing in small doses, and every child can get there.
